In the living room of the Wilkes House, thereâs a corner tucked near the stairs that I avoid.
Itâs not like the basement. It doesnât take a geniusâor a shrinkâto figure out why I wonât go down there. I can go near this corner without feeling like all of the air has been sucked out of the roomâI just donât.
Ever since that first night here, I noticed that the corner was darker than it should be considering the way the moonlight shines through the open window. Itâs like thereâs a boundary surrounding it. At a certain point, the light stops, like it ran into a brick wall.
The corner of my room at the asylum had a strange shadow just like that. A patch of darkness that seems eerily out of place.
I know instinctively what it is.
I made my bed on the other side. Itâs where I sleep, far from the bathroom where Rysâs lantern is kept, and opposite of the dark corner. Carolina thinks itâs because Iâm careful to stay tucked out of sight in case someone decides to peek in the front window. She keeps suggesting that I should at least find a bedroom upstairs where no one would ever see me.
I canât. I donât tell her why, but I have to stay in this room.
I have to keep an eye on the portal.
Who knows what might come popping out if Iâm not watching it?
Iâve given up on arguing that Iâm the Shadow. After she pointed out the blankets and explained that I manipulated the shadows into something that I could actually touch, I decided it was kind of ridiculous to keep denying it. Either I have this weirdo skill because of the prophecy, or because itâs something a fae can doâand since I donât want to focus on the fact that Iâm half-fae, the Shadow it is.
And, if Iâm the Shadow, that means that the Fae Queenâs not going to just let me go. Rys canât find me, and Nine obviously wonât come for me unless I ask him to, but this is the freaking queen of Faerie weâre talking about. Eventually, someoneâs coming for me.
Itâs been twenty years that Iâve had that threat hanging over my head. I know time doesnât work the same in Faerie, but itâs running out. If she was waiting for me to come of age, that deadlineâs already gone.
She could come for me at any time. Right now, thereâs nothing I can do except wait, and practice, and hope like hell that I can figure out a plan on the fly.
Itâs only been a couple of days since I had to accept that I really am the Shadow and, thanks to Carolina smuggling that scrap of paper out of Faerie, there really is a prophecy. Iâll come up with a plan sooner or later.
For now, Iâve only got one thing on my mind.
Sitting in the dark house has done wonders for my night vision. Iâve always been able to see better than I
